Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Japanese tattoo, booking, pricing, and our studio.
What is irezumi?
Irezumi is the Japanese word for tattooing. It refers to the traditional Japanese style of tattooing characterized by large-scale designs featuring mythological creatures, nature motifs, and historical figures. Common imagery includes dragons (ryu), phoenixes (hoo), koi fish, hannya masks, cherry blossoms, peonies, and warriors from ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Irezumi follows strict compositional rules — background elements like wind, water, and clouds connect the main subjects into a flowing, cohesive design that works with the body's natural shape.
How much does a Japanese sleeve tattoo cost in Vancouver?
Our artists charge an hourly rate for all tattoo work. Large-scale Japanese pieces such as sleeves or back pieces are difficult to estimate precisely, as many factors influence session time — including pain tolerance, skin condition, and the level of detail in the design. Rough time and cost estimates are provided during the in-person consultation.
How do I book an appointment?
Consultations are required, as we operate by appointment only. Consultations are free of charge; however, a non-refundable deposit is required to secure your appointment. Please come prepared with a general design idea and placement in mind before visiting the studio. To schedule your consultation or book a session, submit an inquiry through our booking page.
Will I see the design before my appointment?
Designs are not shown prior to the appointment. The consultation ensures both the artist and client fully understand the requested concept. Minor adjustments can be discussed and agreed upon during the tattoo session; however, if the overall idea or subject of the project changes, the artist must be informed at least one week in advance and approve the new design.
What styles do you specialize in?
We specialize in traditional Japanese tattoo (irezumi) and Asian tattoo styles — a discipline that follows a distinct set of rules, structure, and symbolism to maintain authenticity. This includes full sleeves, leg sleeves, backpieces, frontpieces, chest panels, and smaller standalone pieces. Every design is custom-drawn for the client.
What is the rescheduling policy?
If you need to reschedule your appointment, one week's notice is required. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of your deposit. The deposit ensures the artist's time is protected; a new deposit of equal or greater value will be required to continue your project. Once your tattoo has begun, one session per month is typically required until the project is complete. This schedule helps maintain consistency and allows other clients to complete their work on time.
How should I prepare for my tattoo session?
Proper preparation is essential to ensure your tattoo session goes smoothly. Get plenty of rest the night before. Eat a full meal before your session. Bring sugar-filled snacks and an extra meal for breaks. Wear dark or older clothing that you don't mind getting ink on. Headphones or earphones can help you relax and pass time. Cash and card payments are accepted (a 3% processing fee applies to card transactions).
I'm traveling from out of town — how does the process work?
We welcome clients flying or driving in from across Canada and internationally. The process is slightly different for out-of-town clients: instead of an in-person consultation, we'll conduct your consultation virtually over phone or video call. You'll need to take your own measurements and send them to us so we can plan your design accurately. Once that's handled, we'll finalize your appointment date and can schedule longer sessions or back-to-back days to maximize your trip. Everything else — custom design, tattoo session, aftercare — stays the same. Submit an inquiry through our contact form and let us know you're traveling in.
What is the aftercare process?
Remove the wrap 2–3 hours after your session. Gently wash with unscented soap, pat dry, and air dry for 20–30 minutes. Wait a few days before applying moisturizer — once the skin feels dry or tight, apply a thin layer of unscented lotion after each wash. We recommend Lucky Paw Cooling Balm. Do not rewrap, soak in water, pick at flaking skin, or expose to direct sunlight. Visit our dedicated aftercare page for full instructions.
